Popularized in part by trend-setting celebrities like Kylie Jenner, lip injections have become increasingly popular in recent years. Lip injections are a simple, non-invasive procedure and are largely painless. A practitioner injects one of a variety of dermal fillers into the lips to improve the shape, contour and/or volume — while still maintaining a natural look.
Advances in cosmetic medicine over the years have made lip injections much safer and easier – and more natural looking. While many people are wary of the pain associated with lip injections, the vast majority of patients experience minimal discomfort during the procedure and immediately after.
As with any type of cosmetic procedure, there exists a risk of minor side effects. However, qualified and experienced practitioners are usually conservative with the amount of fillers used and treat every patient based on their unique needs. This greatly cuts back on the risk of negative side effects – from over-filling to post-treatment pain.
Lip injections are usually a positive experience, leaving patients feeling more confident about their smiles and their plumped-up pucker. If you’re considering lip fillers, you’re unlikely to experience much pain, and any temporary discomfort is usually manageable.
Do Lip Injections Hurt During The Procedure?
The majority of lip injection treatments are fast and easy – for example, formulas from Juvederm including Volbella and Ultra XC. Some patients may feel minor discomfort and/or a slight pinch, but pain is usually brief and manageable.
Everyone’s body is different, of course, and some people may experience slightly more pain than others. The amount of filler injected can also affect how much pain is experienced. For patients worried about pain, numbing agents can be applied to the upper and bottom lip prior to the procedure.
Most practitioners are careful about how they administer injections and start with smaller amounts. When working with an experienced, board-certified medical professional, patient’s can rest assured that the treatment will be performed with their comfort in mind.
Is Recovery From Lip Injections Painful?
Usually, there is zero pain, or minimal pain, during the recovery period. One of the reasons lip injections are so popular, in fact, is because recovery is typically very easy. Patients should be able to return to their daily routine immediately after having fillers injected.
Each patient’s aftercare will vary depending on the specific treatment received. Usually, patients will have to stay away from alcohol and blood thinners (such as Aspirin) for 24 hours. Patients may need to avoid wearing lip products for 12 hours. Some doctors also advise patients to stay away from hot liquids and drinking straws until swelling goes down.
As for pain, some patients do experience mild discomfort, which can usually be treated easily with ice packs. Some people may also experience bruising at the injection sites. However, if patients follow aftercare procedures carefully, bruising should resolve within a few days.
