What are filler removal products?
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a natural substance found in healthy skin and joints. The majority of dermal fillers available and used worldwide are comprised of hyaluronic acid. One of the major appeals of the HA fillers is that they temporary and reversable. Hyaluronidase, a naturally occurring enzyme, can be used to dissolve the HA fillers.
Why are filler removal products used?
Hyaluronidase is an effective filler removal ingredient. Here are the most common reasons for hyaluronidase to be used:
- Undesired aesthetic result after treatment
- Nodularity
- Infection
- Vascular compromise
- Blindness
- Granuloma
How much Hyaluronidase is needed for treatment?
Approaches to treating filler with hyaluronidase varies depending on the particular circumstance. The amount of hyaluronidase required to dissolve a filler varies based on a number of factors, including:
- Degree of crosslinking
- Duration of the filler being inside body (longer time leads to harder to dissolve and more hyaluronidase being required)
- Urgency
- Inflamatory granuloma / nodules will typically require higher doses of hyaluronidase
- Specific circumstances unique to the patient
How is Hyaluronidase is used?
A typical dermal filler removal treatment requires less than 5 minutes and is typically comfortable for the patient. The product can be mixed with an anesthetic such as lidocaine to numb the treatment area and decrease discomfort. After treatment, the HA is dissolved within the body within a few hours (and sometimes minutes).
There is often some some swelling from the injection, which can take a day or two to resolve. If replacement of filler is desired, this can typically be performed 3 days after the filler removal treatment. In addition, if further filler removal treatment is required repeat injections are performed after 3 days or later.
